Graduate employability rankings: methodology, metrics, and interpretation

How employability-focused rankings measure career outcomes and why the QS, THE, and other employability indices differ in their approach and results.

The rise of employability as a ranking dimension

As the cost of higher education has risen and labor markets have become more competitive, graduate employability has emerged as a central concern for students, parents, and policymakers. Ranking organizations have responded by introducing dedicated employability rankings and incorporating employment indicators into their general rankings. The QS Graduate Employability Rankings, launched in 2015, and the Times Higher Education Global Employability University Ranking, published in partnership with Emerging, are the most prominent examples. These rankings attempt to measure something fundamentally different from research output: the labor market value of a degree.

The emergence of employability rankings reflects a broader shift in how higher education is evaluated. Traditional rankings, with their emphasis on research and reputation, implicitly assume that research quality correlates with teaching quality and graduate outcomes. Employability rankings challenge this assumption by measuring outcomes directly. The results can be surprising: some institutions that dominate research rankings appear lower in employability rankings, while other universities with stronger industry connections and career services outperform their research-based positions.

QS Graduate Employability Rankings methodology

The QS Graduate Employability Rankings use five indicators. Employer Reputation, weighted at thirty percent, is based on a survey of employers who are asked to identify institutions producing the best graduates. Alumni Outcomes, weighted at twenty-five percent, tracks the number of alumni who have achieved senior leadership positions, drawing on databases of executives, entrepreneurs, and high achievers. Partnerships with Employers per Faculty, weighted at twenty-five percent, measures the number of industry collaborations that involve student placements and research. Employer-Student Connections, weighted at ten percent, captures the volume of employer presentations and career events on campus. Graduate Employment Rate, weighted at ten percent, uses institutional data on employment rates within twelve months of graduation.

The heavy weighting of employer reputation introduces a perceptual element that favors well-known brands and may disadvantage smaller or regional institutions whose graduates perform well but whose names are less recognized by global employers. The alumni outcomes indicator, by tracking high achievers, captures the long tail of an institution's historical output but does not necessarily reflect the experience of recent graduates. Users should be aware that an institution with a few highly prominent alumni may score well on this indicator even if the typical graduate's employment prospects are modest.

THE Global Employability University Ranking

The THE Global Employability University Ranking, developed with Emerging, takes a different approach. It relies primarily on a survey of recruiters and managing directors of international companies who are asked which universities they consider best at preparing students for the workplace. The survey covers both hard skills such as digital literacy and specific subject knowledge, and soft skills including teamwork, communication, and adaptability. The results are aggregated into a ranking that reflects employer perceptions rather than quantitative employment data.

This survey-based approach avoids the data collection challenges of collecting comparable employment statistics across dozens of countries with different labor market conditions and data definitions. However, it shares the limitations of all reputation surveys: results may reflect brand recognition, historical relationships between companies and universities, and geographic proximity rather than objective measures of graduate preparedness. Employers in different countries and industries may value different attributes, and a survey respondent in Germany may have different expectations than one in India or Brazil.

Interpreting employability data across countries

Comparing graduate employment data across countries is methodologically challenging. Employment rates, even when well measured, reflect local labor market conditions that are beyond a university's control. A university in a country with high unemployment will likely show lower graduate employment rates than a comparable institution in a booming economy. Salary data, another common employability metric, must be adjusted for purchasing power parity and local cost of living to be comparable. The definition of employment itself varies: some systems count any employment, others require employment related to the field of study, and still others include further study as a positive outcome.

For prospective students, employability rankings offer valuable signals but should be read with context. A university that ranks highly on employer reputation in a global survey may have strong brand recognition worldwide, which is valuable for graduates seeking international careers. However, if you plan to work in a specific country or industry, local employer perceptions and sector-specific recruitment patterns may matter more than the global ranking. Research the universities that employers in your target industry and location actually recruit from, check whether the institution offers internships and work placements in your field, and talk to alumni about their career trajectories. Employability rankings complement this research but should not replace it.
